Michael Smith Switchgear was established in 1985 and is a modern, rapidly expanding electrical control and distribution engineering company, serving both industry within the UK and abroad. Since then we have worked hard to secure a recognised brand within the market place. Michael Smith Switchgear offer a wide range of products and services from panel boards and 4000A distribution systems to PDUs and Power Factor Correction and to maintenance contracts on existing and new switchgear systems. We are situated in the city of Leicester, just a stones throw away from the M1 and M69 and ideally positioned to serve our customer base quickly, efficiently and effectively.
Michael Smith Switchgear will prepare an original design and detailed drawings to customer’s own specification. All drawings are prepared using AutoCAD and can be produced in a variety of formats.
The company’s well-equipped workshops and excellent workforce enable us to turn around a project in order to meet any tight schedules. All equipment we supply is manufactured using sound engineering practices that are associated with British Standards for the manufacture of Low Voltage Switchgear & Control Panels. Our design and manufacturing techniques combine together at all times to guarantee the best quality at our lowest possible prices. Our product is directed at quality and reliability as well as technical advancement in design and performance. You can be certain that we will supply you or your clients with equipment that is long lasting and has a minimal installation, operational and maintenance costs.

We offer a complete service, initial consultation, design, drawing office facility, manufacture, installation, testing and commissioning, and of course, full engineering and technical backup, to ensure that you contract is completed to your complete satisfaction.
Our service engineers are at all times complimentary to our sales and manufacturing, and are always ready to cater quickly and effectively with any difficulties that may arise.
METALWORK
For smaller control panels ‘off the shelf’, enclosures are employed, the enclosures are of high quality with IP ratings up to IP65, and are finished RAL7032 standard grey (as with our larger enclosures any colour may be specified).
For larger enclosures, multi-section switchboard and MCC’s, we use a modular framework system. The system is manufactured by Logstrup and our sister company Willowbrook Fabrications, and comprises a framework enclosure encapsulated by screw-on panels of sheet steel, hinged doors (fitted with lockable handles if required), together with many other refinements to suit your individual needs. The system is fully extendable to suit your future needs. With the metal work being our own system Form 2 through to Form 4 Type 7 can be achieved.
BUSBARS
Busbars are of hard drawn high conductivity copper with SRBP supports. The unique Michael Smith Switchgear design is manufactured and tested to the latest standards and are ASTA certified to 50KA for 3 seconds (Certificate No; 11707). The main and secondary Busbars are of rectangular section and can be run horizontally or vertically as required and are shrouded against accidental contact by SRBP shrouds.
LABELLING
Michael Smith Engraving is our other sister company based on the same site as our manufacturing operation. The engraving workshops comprise of both manual, computer and laser operated machinery (linked to our CAD workstation). Labels of all types can be made from simple strip type identification labels, danger and warning labels, through to multicolour mimics of almost any proportion. W/B/W Traffolyte is used as a standard material but a range of other materials, such as reverse engraved Perspex or glass, are available to meet your requirements.
